Quick Links

Recently in class, we have been learning how to use Powerpoint to hyperlink images. Its quite astounding how useful it is, as if you were to try to do it using html, you'd have to target pixels and complex codes. However, using PowerPoint, everything is broken up for you and is much more convienient and quick to use.
To start off, you will need a few pictures of sites you want to link to. Save them in a folder titled "Links". Next, create a powerpoint with a title of the links you are going to link to the images. Insert the images and align them in a way you find you can work with best. Save the powerpoint in the same folder so you can go back later if you need to change anything. Afterwards, just select each image, go to the hyperlink button on the Standard toolbar, enter the URL (be sure to include the http:// part) and then just hit the OK button. When you are done with all the images, publish the image in File/Save As Webpage & BE SURE TO SAVE AS WEBPAGE (.HTM or .HTML file extension). Remember to save in the same folder as the other image files & powerpoint file! After that, just preview it in File/Web Page Preview and your done! :)

Real Estate

So why is this post titled "Real Estate"? Well, I'm going to have a little rant about Branding today in my blog.
You may wonder, "Serena, what the heck is wrong with you?! Branding is
definitely not real estate!" Think about it though, branding and real estate really do come hand in hand.
When you watch a commercial, read a billboard, a bus shelter, an ad in magazine or any form of media advertisement, as Mr. Case says, they are in your brain, setting up a little piece of land in your head and everytime you hear something that relates to it, your brain automatically recalls that little piece of land and makes you do funny things.
Still sounds weird? Here's an example:
Ba da ba ba ba :) I'm lovin' it!
Just do it.
We sell for less everyday.
If none of those spark some sort of memory/desire/interest in you, then you need to move out of the hole your living in ;]
goodbye,
Serena

Powerpoint 101

During class, we familiarized ourselves with PowerPoint even further. With all the new information being thrown at us, I found myself looking at PowerPoint in a much different light. Usually, I would think PowerPoint was quite organic and had little functions with it other than making slides and such. However, now I feel much different about the so-called "simple" PowerPoint.
After I get home, I will update this blog entry further. For now, the bell has just rung so I gots to go :)

I'm in big trouble...

Illegal downloading. We've
all done it before. However, I must confess I am a huge addict of illegal downloading. Honestly, I've never bought a CD in my life. It just seems like a waste of money when there's all the enticing, free software that allow you to download music and other media for the best price - absolutely nothing.
I've never thought much about it, and definitely never thought it was wrong - morally or legally. The fact is simple: it's going to be there whether you download it or not.
Besides, it's just a few songs. At an early age (I think about 7), I had already discovered the freebie of downloading music and I found it to be truly amazing discovery. Never did I think I was hurting anyone when downloading the hottest, new album.
Today in class, though, really helped me open my sights to how overwhelming the damage of downloading songs can really be.
It starts off with one person downloading a few songs. Sure, seemingly harmless, the person downloads the latest single from their favourite artist. No harm done -
if it only, was just one person. But in reality, the numbers are more likely to match if you multiply that single person by 10, then multiply that by 10, multiply that by 100 and then multiply that by 100000. Even those numbers are much less that in real life, as the worldwide downloading has spread like wild fire due to the convenience and insufficient laws.
So I realized that although it may seem like nothing's happening to the excessive amount of downloading happening in the world and in Canada, a new law is about to be cracked down on us and it will be enforced very harshly. Does this mean I will immediately remove Limewire off my computer and delete every song off my iPod? Definitely not.
However, I will proceed with caution.

Power of PowerPoint

For my second
article, I read a very informational one about PowerPoint that really helped open my eyes and realize the mistakes I have been making and how much better I could improve on them.
How to survive a "Death by Powerpoint"!

Within this first
article, it captured my attention and definitely allowed me to relate. While reading this article, I recalled all the times I've just sat there through a PowerPoint, devastatingly bored. Cringing, I remembered that I was apart of the enormous group of people that have done absolutely terrible PowerPoint presentations.
The article described the terror of sitting through a sleep-inducing presentation and how, by the end of it, we've learned just as much as when we first walked into the room. The witty author describes how our society puts so much emphasis on the functions of the buttons in PowerPoint but interestingly enough, never on how to present one.
