Computer World!
Friday, March 27, 2009 // 9:22 AM
We have a Photoshop Test next next Wednesday! Be sure to refresh your memory!

In class today we discussed Summatives. Mr. Case also recommended the use of Calendars such as Google calendar.

The internet was divised by the American Military in the 60's. Phonelines are connected very limitedly whereas the internet is connected to each station, like a web.

Ftp - file transfer protocol
Http - Hyper text transfer protocol, fairly new [came out in the 80's] [most dominant] set of rules for transfering hyper text pages

www- world wide web, a network on the internet that uses hyper text transfer protocol

Hyper text - code embedded text, ability to link text [e.g. if you click a link, it loads up http and connects to other pages]

HTML - Hyper text markup language

Browser turns html code into something we could see.

View/Source - you can see what the page looks like in HTML

Web authoring programs - create html pages

If you alter the html source code of a webpage and save it, it changes on your desktop but the original webpage remains the same because the actual source is saved on a server and not your computer.

HTML files are text but they have links to tell you where you can get pictures, videos, sound files, etc.

A tag is a small piece of code you input (e.g. body, font, etc)

Photo Manipulation
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 // 9:22 AM
Mr. Case was not in class today so instead we had Mr. Lim supplied for us.
We worked on Photo Manipulation today which is when we mess around with the pictures but there are three rules of Photo Manipulation that we must keep in mind:

1. Get permission.

2. Be respectful and know when not to cross the line.

3. The images we manipulate do not leave our class.

There were a couple of photos of the teachers of Woodbine such as Mr. Case, Ms. Griffiths, Mr. Tiessen and Mr. Burton. Once we were done the images, we made sure to drop them off in the drop off folder.

Sincerely,
- Serena

March Break is over...
Monday, March 23, 2009 // 9:34 AM
I'm very depressed at the moment because March Break is over and we are back to school.

We made slideshows and messed around in the Photo Organizer in Adobe Photoshop 5.0.

Anyways, hopefully I will get used to school life again! :)

MARCH BREAAAAAAAK! :D
Friday, March 13, 2009 // 2:22 PM
Woohoo! It is the last day before March Break! We basically talked about Photoshop ethics today about how we should not mess around with an image of someone without their permission. You've also have to keep in the lines of respect and everything we do in BTT stays in the class.

We basically messed with Peggy's picture and made it look hilarious even though the original was quite pretty :)

OKAY WELL HAVE FUN THIS MARCH BREAK! I will upload my essay sometime over the march break if I have time :D

YAY!

Essay + Five Images
Thursday, March 12, 2009 // 11:05 PM
During BTT today, we basically played around with the five images we retrieved. I didn't have any images since I don't have a camera. Instead, the people who didn't bring the images were told to write an essay about the reason we use Photoshop and why it is helpful and essential in this world of technology. Teachers constantly belittle this nifty invention simply because most of them are ignorant of its potential greatness, if used correctly & for the right reasons.

These essays will be uploaded onto a site so the teachers will have access to it and can educate themselves on all the aspects of Photoshop and how it has helped our world advance greatly in all technological aspects. It can prepare you for the future, since many jobs these days require some background in computers and photo design and editing would be an appealing addition to your resume.

Even better, now you can literally create your image without having to cut down one tree! Simply create it on Photoshop and use it for whatever you need without having to ever stress out about a lawsuit. I know there are many people who consider Photoshop as a hobby and love to spend hours creating away on their computers. And this is a wonderful hobby since it provides you with practice for a skill highly desired in the computer industry and it also puts you up there with highly skilled professionals.

Photoshop is also for people like myself, who cannot draw even stick figures to save their life. Basically, Photoshop does all the work and you just command it on what to do. Imagine what Leonardo Da Vinci could have done with this tool! Mona Lisa in three months, anyone? Unlike the days he was born, where artists spent tens of years trying to complete a masterpiece to only sell it once, Photoshop allows you to create duplicates to sell it over and over and over again!

And it goes against two classic lessons: you can't go back in time & you can't undo your mistakes. Actually, you can with a click of a button! The nifty "Undo" button allows Photoshop artists everywhere to sleep at night knowing that they could always change a certain effect, filter, text, and more.
(I'm pretty sure that if Leonardo Da Vinci drew a moustache on the Mona Lisa by accident, he would be screwed.)

What's even better is that you can save your image in various stages of completion and if you don't like your final product, simply close it and choose one of the stages you saved and try again! And don't even get me started on layers!

So think about it teachers, we as brilliant, hard-working (money-starved) students, would we really waste such an amazing tool to draw a beard on the teachers we dislike instead of creating masterpieces we could possibly sell for millions? Honestly, what a joke! So the next time you think we're doing something bad on Photoshop, please take into consideration all the points I've presented today and realize that the world doesn't revolve around you (Just kidding). :P

AND a great shoutout to Joanna who saved me from not writing this blog entry/essay rough draft, which would've lead to failing BTT, which THEN would've lead me to me becoming a bum on the street panhandling for money to buy a burger at McDonalds.

Now, I'm going to try to do my homework from other classes and not fail them too,

Get organized!
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 // 9:08 AM
We looked at Photoshop 5's Photo Organizer.

Click "View and Organize Photos" in the Photoshop 5 Starting Box. Used for organizing. With digital cameras, it is easy to get thousands of pictures onto your computer instantly.

Photo Downloader creates a subfolder for those photos you are uploading at one time. A new subfolder will be created the next time you upload images to your computer.

Photo Organizer as it is uploading onto the computer, makes changes (such as a red eye fix).

Edit/Preferences - Alters the changes Photo Downloader makes during uploading. You can turn off/on the auto-fixes such as red eye.

Similar to the popular website "FACEBOOK", Photo Organizer allows you to tag people in picture so you can organize your images better! It allows you to be even more detailed by creating subcatergories under your tags (e.g. if you tag family, you can tag a subcatergory named kids).

File/Rename - Renames the common base name. (the name attached to all of the photos such as charlottehospital1.jpg, charlottehospital2.jpg)

You can select certain images to rename them individually. Just select the images and go to File/Rename.

You can even give ratings to your image in a similar fashion to tags.

You can order prints by dragging the image onto the Order Prints toolbar and fill out the form!

You can also use your images to create a photobook.

Collections can be created as many times as you want because it doesnt take up extra space since it doesn't COPY the image. Collections are similar to an index.

Wiki Images
Friday, March 6, 2009 // 9:42 AM
Alright I am not afraid to admit that I have absolutely no artistic talent. Even my stick figures look very disfigured. Most people expect me to be good just because they expect a lot from me but I'm sorry to have disappointed those people because I SUCK.

So when I discovered we were creating original Adobe Photoshop images, I definitely panicked. Digital images usually heavily rely on artistic talents. Sure, you could fake it and use all the fancy tools Adobe has to offer to disguise your lack of talent but in truth, the talent of art is needed to create something appealing to the eye.

Anyways, I decided I needed to still try my best so I spent five hours (procrastinating and what not) on an image that describes the effects of city lighting, pollution, and what technology has done to disguise the natural lighting of the moon.

I'm going to start creating a new image soon. Shehnila's vector image is really great and I've always loved vector because you don't have to worry about pixels and what they will look like when they get resized. I might consider vector but it will definitely be a challenge. Anyways, if you have any ideas, please let me know.

Byyyeee!

Filters
Thursday, March 5, 2009 // 2:33 PM
Today we learned about Photoshop Filters.

A good filter will help you create a masterpiece so it's imperative you get introduced to all the lovely filters of Adobe Photoshop. Since there are so many different versions of Photoshop, there are new Filters being added everyday. But these are generally from the photoshop versions we use in class which is Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0.

Filters are similar to the Powerpoint special effects, in the way that they are cool to use but dangerous if overused. The trick to using filters is to use them in specific ways.
(e.g. unsharp filter on the eyes makes the eyes look more alive)

Filter-

Top will show the last filter you've used (ctrl+F)

Adjustments-

Posterize = takes away all the colours except the four main colours (CYMK = Cyan Yellow Magenta and Black)
Threshold = Takes everything and creates a straight black and white image. can be used in combination with other tools (e.g. Magic selection) to create shadows to increase contrast.
Photo Filter = If you wanted to make the image more warmer or cooler, etc.
Artistic = Creates artist effects. This is one you must heed to the warning that less is indeed more.
Blur: Gaussian blur = random blur. Motion blur = being blown in the wind, moving in a direction
Brush Strokes = puts ink outlines
Distort = Adding ripples
Spherize = Goes in and warps something (e.g. used to make planets, etc)
Noise = Add grain
Pixelate = different ways to segment your image into pixels
Render = clouds, lighting effects (lens flare, spotlight, etc)
Sketch = similar to brush strokes filter. (e.g. plaster)
Texturize = Adds texture to picture (e.g. canvas, stain glass)
Other = Adjusts colouration.
Video = You do not need to know this. Used for DVD or video.

Au revoir!

Intro to Photoshop Elements 5
Wednesday, March 4, 2009 // 9:37 AM
In class today, we used Photoshop Elemnts 5.0 instead of Photoshop Elements 1.

To resize an image, you must figure out what the longest edge is (length or width).

Image/Resize/Image Size

Resample: Your changing the actual information (e.g. how many pixels are there.)

For example, the default setting does not select resample, so when you go in to change the width/height/resolution, the pixel dimension stay the same and only the document size changes. Resample allows you to change the pixel dimension as well as the document size.

File/Save for Web = Image/Resize/Image Size

Edit/Clear/Undo History - Clears the undo function so that you cannot go back. Saves memory.

Scratch Disk - Where it saves stuff that its working on now.

Goodbye for now,
- Serena

Bert Monroy & Photoshop Images
Monday, March 2, 2009 // 9:24 AM
Mr. Case was absent today so we had a supply teacher.

Mr. Case left behind some videos for us to watch relating to Bert Monroy, the artist we talked about last class. In one of the videos, he shows us how he did the brick walls and windshield wipers of the railway picture we saw last time, which has an immense amount of detail. The video was quite interesting but it made me feel like my own photoshop images were nothing in comparison.

After we watched the videos, we all got to work on our Photoshop images. We are responsible for creating an entirely new image made up entirely from photoshop with no additional images from the internet. I am still quite unsure of what to make. In the example, Mr. Case created a brick wall and I still don't know what I should make.

If you have any suggestions, leave a msg on the shoutbox!

Peace,
- Serena
