Deal or No Deal!
Thursday, April 30, 2009 // 2:14 PM
Lalala! It's time my blog posts start sounding a bit more exciting! I'm sorry for the slacking off but I will try my best to make them amazing from now on.
Business Concept - explain roughly what plan is for your business
General Idea
Costs and obstacles
How will you make money?
Why should Mr. Case not laugh at this idea?
Just because everyone laughs at your idea does not mean it won't work but try to keep in consideration the viability.
Gross = total amount of money we bring in
Net = is amount of money you earn after deducting the expenses
Capitol expense = any expenses that you will have even after your business is done (e.g. a camera is a capitol expense but film is not because once you've used up your film, it's gone)
operational expenses + consumable expenses are other type of expenses
The tricky part may be that although you business loses money initially, some businesses have the capitols purchases which means you can reuse them for next summer or the summer after meaning that in the long run, your business will turn a profit and become viable.
Opening a business is always a risk but would you rather make 2000 working the whole summer at McDonalds or lose maybe 1000 in a month but have all the capitol expenses paid off to make money next summer. Therefore, you have to decide.
Pros of owning a business:
- you are your own boss
- if all goes well, you can make more in the long run than in McDonalds
- job experience
- owning your own business means you tend to work harder because you want yourself to succeed whereas if you worked in McDonalds you probably will be bored and not very interested in the fundamentals of your job
Cons of owning a business:
- Risky
- may not always turn a profit
- lots of work and stress
Personally, I'd take the business road anyday. I think if you want to succeed in life, you must take risks. It's an absolute must.

BTT Summative Part 1
Monday, April 27, 2009 // 8:59 AM
Flash and Dreamweaver test next monday!
We talked about the summative today!
- Summative: to create a legal and viable (something realistic) business in Ontario
- Dumb ideas: Ferrari dealership
- Think about: Are you wasting your time working at McDonalds?
- Level Four: when you hand in your final product at the end of May, Mr Case will look at this and say its perfect and you can start the next day.
Level Three: All steps are complete but it might not work.
Level Two: Probably wouldnt work, have to change a couple of things.
Level One: Mr Case laughs?
Zero : did not finish.
- Alot of people run into trouble because they think of one of two things: Retail or food preparation
Problems with retail:
Let's say you wanted to sell basketball equipment, what problems will you encounter that will make this business not viable?
- Where are you going to buy equipment?
- e.g. buy from sport chek, sell at higher price to turn profit
- wholesale is cheaper, retail is more expensive
- wholesale is in larger quantity, buy in bulk
It is possible to buy wholesale & sell retail, but there are other issues.
Supply - Have to be able to purchase the equipment.
- Buy basketballs from US, you must pay shipping & duty(tax)
Basketball in US = $20. Shipping: $10 Duty: $10 = no profit
- To do importing, must research all laws and you have taken into all the taxes, shipping, etc applicable
Storage:
- need place to store
- need some on hand (stock)
- need money upfront to pay for stock
- store = full stock
- Renting store = insurance, electricity, water, security alarm, etc [must take into consideration]
- you need licenses from the city
Food Service Industry:
- e.g. hot dog stands, bubble tea stand
- food industry needs licensing, permits, etc
- submit inspections
- Catering: need to be approved for selling food, providing food
Everyone for wednesday, come up with a business idea that they are going to do.
Run your idea to 3 people, 2 your age 1 adult.
Be critical of an idea, think of all the flaws of your business scheme.
In Ontario, three different kind of businesses:
Sole proprietorship - one person only who is in charge of the business, you own the business, all yours. you can have employees but one person OWNS the business. e.g. small stores (Smith's variety store),
Partnership - Two or more people who are in charge of the business, own the business. Usually have equal share but not necessarily. [if you are in a partnership & you want to do it alone, you can buy the partner out (pay his portion of the company)]
Corporation - Legal entity that is set up. With a corporation, the corporation exists seperately from the owner. (e.g. you can sue the corporation and not the owner) You can tax the corporation differently than the person. Exists independently of the owner. Tax benefits of being a corporation. Corporation can be owned by multiple people. Set up with "shares". More supply = things aren't worth as much. More Demand= Things are worth more.

Fixed Bugs
Monday, April 20, 2009 // 9:07 AM
Wow our index on the wiki is quite messed up! It seems like people have been trying to link a certain link wayyy too much and now most of them are broken. Guys, fix these please because we have an exam not too far away and it would be unwise to leave them broken!
I fixed Blogger Tips & Web Designing Menu so please don't touch those so that they can remain in their current condition. Anyways, today in class we worked on our own animation. After a little suggestion from Mr. Case, I've decided to do the sinking of the Titanic! It's going to be a challenge but it'll be at least something that interests me!
Au revoir!

Epiphanies
Friday, April 17, 2009 // 9:23 AM
Wow it's been quite a morning. I've been doing 30 hour famine for the past 30 hours and I've really been dying. I think I'm very humbled from this experience, seeing as how food is such a huge impact in my life. I've even noticed that I've been quite grumpy without food and I've basically slept the whole way through. Luckily, it was only 30 hours and not like five days. I felt like flying when breakfast came and I was very educated from the whole experience.
Another thing that happened was I was nominated for the 9A valedictorian and will be voted against the winners of the other SSG. I'm really flattered I was chosen but to be honest, there's some stiff competition! I have serious doubts that I am going to win because a lot of the other nominees are amazing people who have a lot of initiative and focus. But if by some magic force I do win, I really want to represent the grade 9s of Woodbine JHS of the graduating class 2009 to the best of my capability.
In BTT, we showed Mr Case our pool table assignments and went on to work on our original assignments. I'm still not really sure what I want to do but I really want it to be good because I'm trying really hard to get back on task and focus on being the best student that I know I can be. I'm really trying to get high marks because I've realized that school is a very important element of my life and I need to remind myself of that.
Slideshow creating
File/Import/Import To Library
Create the images as symbols.
Put each image on its own layer.
Insert keyframes & Tweens and adjust the Alpha(transparency) percentage on the keyframes to transition the beginning from completely transparent until the end of the tween to become completely non-transparent.
Filters!
Filters are definitely useful things to master in Flash.
IMPORTANT FACTS
-Dotted line means nothing's there to tween.
-White circle means there's no tween
-White square means the end of the tween
- Onion Skin allows you to see your frames before & after so you can be more exact in your tweens & transitions.
JUST A HEADS UP GUYS!
Our websites are going to be finished next week so be sure to do some serious construction over the weekend if you don't want them to be rushed. The same to our original flash animations (not the pool table, you should be done by now).
That's all for now!

Updates & Flash!
Thursday, April 16, 2009 // 2:28 PM
Wow it has been quite a while since I've last posted in this blog! I apologize for this but I've been swamped with summatives and tests! We recently had a BTT test and it was simple enough, though I really wished I prepared more for it. Also, we are still working on our flash animations of a pool table. When we're done the pool table, we will be able to move on to create our own original animation.
We also watched Animator Vs Animation on Youtube, which I've already seen but it is still cool to re-watch. I've also been doing podcasts with Peggy and Neda on the events of the school so be sure to check that out!
Okay, got to go,

Flash!
Thursday, April 9, 2009 // 2:15 PM
Today in class we learned about the wonderful world of Flash!
- used for animation
- used for encoding video files
- .FLA = flash project file, set of instructions
- .FLV = flash video project video, videos can be viewed
- .SWF = Shockwaveflash
Actionscript
- Actionscript is the programming language embedded into flash.
- very simple
Frame rate is how many frames you see in a second. 25 frames per second = movies in theatre
Youtube videos and other web based flash runs about 12 frames per second.
Keyframe is a frame where something happens in an animation
Tween stands for in between
The more frames in an animation, the slower the animation goes.
Mr. case also taught us how to "play" pool. Basically, he created an animation based on physics and showed us tweens, keyframe, etcetc.

Wiki edits
Thursday, April 2, 2009 // 2:14 PM
YAY! Tomorrow is a PA Day!
Today I edited some Wiki pages, by including links in most of the pages to link them back to the index and home page.
We also worked on our Dreamweaver websites by creating a homepage. I had a bit of difficulty seeing as Dreamweaver does alot of automatic editing for you, and I myself, enjoy the freedom of creating my own code, since I'm already familiar with HTML.
Anyways gotta go!

April FOOLS
Wednesday, April 1, 2009 // 9:13 AM
Today in class we talked about viruses. Viruses are usually attached to files that are desirable to the victim (e.g. Photoshop, Music, Movies, games, etc). We also discussed domains and webpages.
Basically, I answered a few forum questions so check that out! I hope I helped, and if I didn't, please reply and I'll try my best to find the answer.
Signing off,
- Serena
