My rant on BTT
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 // 8:59 AM
OMG :| BTT Summative due friday! I'm so scareddd. But you know what? I shouldn't be because we have so many resources at our service that all we really have to do is follow the instructions and be creative!
Mr. Case has provided us with all the essential tools and we have to make sure to employ these tools to the best of our ability. BTT is something that we will see more and more in life and it is best that we are educated right now to make sure our future is bright with knowledge!
Today I worked on my business letter and I really want to make my logo better.
We talked about taxation & portable format.
In ontario you are subject to a number of taxes. e.g. food sertax (sp?), taxed for importing, disposal taxes, make any money over $9000 you need to pay income tax,
When you do a tax return, you get credits by calculating certain activities and you can get money back from the government.
- our taxes pay for OHIP (health card), teachers/school, police officers, firemen/firewomen, military, government services, roads,
taxation in regards to sales tax -
- pst & gst = 13%
- 8% pst, 5% gst
- if your a business making less than 30, 000 , you don't have to pay gst
Good luck,
- Serena

Work period!
Monday, May 25, 2009 // 9:09 AM
Today we were graciously given a work period to work on our summative which is due this week! I'm really scared but I guess if I manage my time well, I should be able to do it.
Print out ONE mail merge, brochure, letterhead, etc
electronically hand in:
- five letters
- data source
- original mail merge
- webpage
It's not the complete list but I hope it helps! The business blog is always the best place to look for info!
Sincerely,
- Serena

Continue on Business Letter
Friday, May 22, 2009 // 9:23 AM
Today in class we continued to finish our business letters!
I looked up a few sites to help me as well as use the one that Mr. Case used. I tried to make sure that my point was heavily supported by persuasive points. Since I am of a young age, a lot of people won't take me seriously and believe that I have the initiative to do well in my business. Therefore, a business letter is fundamental to my success since it is basically my chance to impress my potential customers or business partners.
Structuring a business letter with the correct format will also add a degree of professionalism.
Off to work on my business letter!

Write to impress!

For the summative, the quality of your project is vital for the success of your grade. The finished product should be put into binders with good copies of works that look professional & organized.
MLA - modern language association
typically, a business letter uses arial or times new roman 10-12 size
first thing on the top of your business letter is the date, on the left hand side. Use a consistent format the whole way through. Next is the senders' address.
However there are times when you don't put it such as when you already have a letterhead. After the senders' address is the recipients' address. Afterwards is the salutations (e.g Dear ____, To Whom It May Concern, etc). Be as specific as possible. Sometimes you can put the senders' address on the bottom after your closing regards (Sincerely,) to personalize the letter further but its up to you.
Body of your letter has 3 parts: Introduction, Middle, Conclusion.
Introduction: introduces why you are writing the letter. This has to be important and convincing so that they will continue reading your letter. It tells the reader why you are writing to them.
Middle: convincing them. Supporting your points.
Conclusion: ends off the letter.
Everything is left justified.
For more information, go to this site: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/653/01/
Many samples on the internet so be sure to check them out. Make sure they are in MLA format.
Signature block will have your phone number & perhaps, also your address.
Letterhead is seperate, it can be any font & creative. letterhead should not have a date.
Proper MLA format you either indent each paragraph or you put a space in between each letter but
NEVER BOTH. (usually better if you put a space between)
Assignment :
Writing a business letter in mail merge format
- 5 potential people you want to solicit your business to
- convince the people (e.g. offer them first product half price, etc)
- conclude by thanking them for the time that they took to read the letter
Final Product:
1 Printed Letter
Electronally handing in the data set, the original letter and the five letters sent are among these files too.
Goal for summative:
- prove to Mr. Case that you can use all the tools that we've learned
- convince him that the business will succeed because of your knowledge that you learned this year in BTT
- sell the business, prove that you're serious
* as a subsitute for DreamWeaver, use Page Breeze!
Guys let's do good things for this summative and impress Mr. Case so that we can be proud of our accomplishment!
Goodbye,

Presentation is key!
Friday, May 15, 2009 // 9:24 AM
We're starting something new in class today!
A brochure is a piece of 8x11 paper folded two times.
- Great way to get detailed information to someone.
- Business card- little information
-Letterhead- quite often goes in the garbage after usage is done
-Brochure- can be kept for future reference
Brochure & Webpage can contain the same information.
Microsoft Publisher 2003 is the program we will use to create a brochure.
- dont use the templates for the brochures
- make your layout creative and innovative so that your customer have something fresh and exciting to look at
- include your own style & flair of design
- do research before making the brochure! find a site that can help you
- you can finish your brochure and then convert it to a webpage
- save it as a webpage & edit it in dreamweaver
- use domain for your email: e.g. serena@serenaflowershop.com
- marketing is key to making your project memorable
- present it in a glossy binder, or something that will make it look professional, organized, creative, etc
- you want Mr. Case to remember your project the most
- consistency = everything should be consistent. business card, letterhead, brochure, webpage, etc. you want everything to be familiar
- marketing is embedding yourself into your consumer's memory
So Long,
- Serena

Business Cards + Letterheads!
Monday, May 11, 2009 // 9:00 AM
Today we're doing.... *drumroll* BUSINESS CARDS! ZOMFDGWAFISJT!
Business card is a very effective form of advertising. It makes your business look more legitimate. When your business card sucks, it gives a bad impression to your potential customers.
Letterhead - has a logo and address at the top. [looks more professional, important document, sometimes legal]
- (in the older days, it was used because it was harder to forge a document)
Effective use of business cards (Mr. Case's favourites)- memorable, stands out
- sometimes their uniqueness can work for or against them
examples.
- business card on a clothes pin
- usb keys business card
- dog tag business card
- pills business card
- dental care one with an imprint of teeth
- edible business card
- divorce lawyer where the card you can rip
- second hand store (reuses other business card so the card is actually second hand)
RULES FOR A BUSINESS CARD- some elements of design
- required info: phone number, contact address, url (has to be consistent), name, position, etc
- Letterhead: contact information, logo, be creative
To create a letterhead:
One) Create>Header & Footer
Two) Insert the phrases 'My Business Address' on the very top and the URL in the footer box
Three) Save it as a template (.dot) or document as a letterhead
Creates Business Cards:
Tools>Letters&Mailing>Envelopes&Labels>Label Options>Select one>New Document
Toodles!

Check your domain!
Friday, May 8, 2009 // 2:27 PM
Now that you have your business name and logo, make sure you aren't infringing other people's content!
*Change your business name if someone already has your business name
A reason that you should refrain from using the same name as another business because if you advertise your business, you could possibly bring in customers for the other business and not your own.
*A good suggestion is to go to Internic.ca or Domain.ca to see if your domain name is taken.
Anyways, have a spectacular weekend guys~!

I'm back!
Thursday, May 7, 2009 // 2:19 PM
Wow it's been a rollercoaster. I've missed so many BTT classes and I feel like I'm falling in a deep abyss of despair. I've even missed the BTT test and now have to do an extra credit assignment in order to make up for it. So here's the moral of the story, kids: DON'T MISS BTT CLASS AT SUCH A CRITICAL TIME! Trust me, learn from my mistakes.
I don't know who reads this blog but yeah, I'm sorry for slacking on the updating. So the logo & budget & concept & everything else is due tomorrow at 9AM SHARP! As in when the clock strike 9, you're out if you don't have all the required work in the folder. For the business name, include a paragraph about why you have chosen the name. Make sure to follow the rules and guidelines when it comes to choosing a name.
In case you guys didn't know, the BTT Summative blog is going to be your best friend for the next month and a half! :)
http://woodbinejhs.ca/wiki08/tiki-view_blog.php?blogId=29
Contains the logo guidelines, helpful tips, reminders, etcetc! Read it, memorize it, worship it! :)
Be sure to post your business name resource into the thread in the forum so that we can have a collective thread of different ideas and resources! Let's all help each other in this time of need.
